Winning medals at the Tokyo Olympics | How has Team GB done so well in the past?
A slight diversion from normal content, but I felt this may be topical and interesting.
It’s related to the comments I have made about football where money buys success. It seems money buys success in most sports. Including the Olympics!
In this video I research how central government funding has influecne the number of medals won at the Olympic games.
Why would Government’s do this? National pride, to show advancement and to get one over the old enemy, probably. But this is an examination of the correlation between funding and medals.
The big change for British athletics can more or less be traced back to the introduction of the National Lottery. This was when much more funding came in for various sports, including Team GB.
As we head into the Tokyo Olympics 2020, these key underlying factors are bound to play a role in how many medals will be won by respective nations.
Of course, there will be individual talent involved, but without nuturing and getting the best out of that talent, you can’t hope to get high on the medal table.
I have put some illustrations in with actual numbers as I was trying to remember them off the top of my head. So sorry if I say one thing and the chart says the other. The chart is correct!
